Kumbaya isn’t enough

In October 2015, I spent a week on the campus of Summit University in Clarks Summit, PA for a class.  I recall a conversation with a few undergrad students I know from summer camp.  I don’t remember many things about that conversation except one of the individuals had an issue she was working through but was going to wait to see how it played out and not be proactive in taking care of it.  The two next lines I will never forget.  I said, “you know, God gave you a brain so you can actually think through things, right?”  The other student said, “that’s a classic Chris Peoples line right there.”

What does that have to with Kumbaya, you ask?

When I think of Kumbaya, I think of individuals sitting around a campfire waiting for God to make an appearance and do something spectacular.  Come to think of it, I think many Christians are sitting around waiting for God to make an appearance and do something spectacular.

There’s a problem with that…

If you’re a follower of Jesus, God already made an appearance and did something spectacular.  He redeemed you and me.  He gave us a relationship with him.  He planted the Holy Spirit inside of us.  He allowed us to be part of his plan to make disciples of all nations.  It’s pretty spectacular that God did that for a bunch of sinful people.

Do something for Jesus this year!

Most Christians and churches are sitting around waiting for God to make an appearance in our lives, our churches and our communities.  I challenge to stop sitting around.

Yes, we need to listen to the Holy Spirit’s direction in our lives.

Yes, we need to live as Biblical as possible.

Yes, we need to love the people around us consistently.

No, we don’t need a big plan to make it happen.  Here are a few ways we can re-present Jesus today and join his mission of making disciples.

  1. Donate the excess in your home to an organization that helps people in need.
  2. Pay for the car behind you in the drive-thru.
  3. Check on the elderly in your neighborhood.
  4. Invite a family to your home for a meal.
  5. Tip well when you go to a restaurant.
  6. Let another person check-out before you at the grocery store.
  7. Slow down long enough to hear the Holy Spirit speaking to you today.

Finally, we have this verse all over our house.  Take some time to ponder on it today.  9622-ea_be still and know that I am God.png

Ask God how he would like to use today.  Remember, you’re not actually a follower of Jesus if you’re not following Him.

I’d love to hear ways that you re-present Jesus to those in your influence.  Leave a comment below.
